Coordinate a date with the city for the first Saturday following the first week of football practice worked good - this made it easy to communicate with the boys. Announce the car wash to the boys at the end of their first night's practice and have them sign up for a shift (about 10 per shift worked well). Early shift: setup at 7:30 a.m. and work until 11:30 a.m. Late shift: 11:30 - 3:30 p.m. (cleanup is 3-3:30 p.m.) Remiind the boys (following Friday's practice) about the car wash the next day.
Coordinator should arrange with other parents to bring EVERYTHING (do not rely on the boys for supplies).
In addition to the coordinator, there should be 5 parents at each shift. One will be exclusively in charge of taking money and the others will work as motivators, directors, hose tenders, ladder movers, and quality control. Parents should avoid working themselves and direct the boys to where they are needed. Whoever has the hose is quality control. Rinse, wash, rewash if necessary. Do not dry until clean!
Consider a co-coordinator so that the coordinator doesn't have to be there all day.
Worked best for cars to park nose into the park rather than parallel to the fence.
Be sure to take pictures.
